INSUL is a software tool designed for predicting sound insulation in various constructions like walls, floors, ceilings, and roofs. It uses theoretical models to estimate sound transmission loss, weighted sound reduction index, and impact sound insulation. The program is particularly useful for evaluating new materials or combinations of materials that lack laboratory test data. INSUL features a database of over 250 materials, supports multiple languages, and provides calculations in both imperial and metric units. INSUL can be used to quickly evaluate new materials and systems, or to investigate the effects of changes to existing designs. It models materials using well known elastic plate theory including allowances for thick panel effects as published by Ljunggren, Rindell and others. More complex partitions are modelled using work by Sharp, Cremer and others. INSUL takes account of finite size effects which are very important when predicting small samples such as windows and also for normal elements at low frequencies. Like any prediction tool INSUL is not a substitute for measurement. However, comparisons with test data indicate that INSUL reliably predicts STC values to within 3dB for most constructions.
Features of INSUL :
- Material Database: Includes a comprehensive collection of over 250 materials to aid in accurate modeling.
- Prediction Models: Uses advanced theoretical models to estimate sound transmission loss, weighted sound reduction index (Rw), and impact sound insulation.
- Customization Options: Allows users to evaluate new materials or combinations of materials that might not have laboratory test data.
- User-Friendly Interface: Supports multiple languages for broader accessibility.
- Flexible Units: Provides calculations in both imperial and metric units for convenience.
- Applications: Suitable for walls, floors, ceilings, roofs, and other building elements.
System Requirements
- Windows installations support Windows 10 and 11.

Overview of Marshall Day Acoustics INSUL 9
With extensive drop down menus to select materials, and simple choices for construction details you can quickly evaluate different constructions. INSUL shows a picture of your construction and a graph of the 1/3 octave TLs.
Development on INSUL started more than 15 years ago, based on research in the USA by Ben Sharp and others.
It has gradually developed into a unique tool that incorporates the best of many research papers published over the last 15 to 20 years.
INSUL can be customised for particular materials (for instance a particular manufacturer’s plasterboard).
INSUL is a program for predicting the sound insulation of walls, floors, roofs, ceilings and windows. Impact sound and rain noise of floors and roof.
